Jacobite Rally 2025

The Jacobite Navigational Rally took place on Saturday 6th December on a typical early winter night, with six crews participating across four classes. Leaving Dingwall from 7.30pm, we joined Map 21 on Old Evanton Road, and visited Foulis and Katewell before the first Control at Evanton, on roads not used for many years.

On to more familiar territory around Alness, Invergordon and Delny, the VW Polo of Experts Alan Radin and Graham Watson held an early advantage over Colin Christie and Dan Forsyth in their Suzuki Ignis as they turned back westwards from the midpoint. The threat of fog hanging between the trees looked like it might slow the pace, but apparently none of the drivers got the memo…

With a brief visit to Scotsburn, we made for the Ardross Hall finish venue after a quick loop around Strathy, and as sole Non-Expert entrants, Beefy Fraser and Ross MacKay were going well in the VW Tiguan. With tougher navigation more closely matched to the Experts than Novices, and with only a couple of dropped codes, it was otherwise a fine outing.

Novices? Not for much longer, Jesse Wigman and Emma Garden brought the Citroen Dyane 6 out once again, and fared very well on all but one section, whilst Hugh Munro and Graham Norrie in their Range Rover Evoque incurred a cluster of penalties by taking one simple wrong turn leading to a bypassed Control. The lentil soup and sandwiches back at the hall were a welcome consolation prize.

Pete MacInnes and Neil McGregor took on the Historic class, with the 75-plate Hybrid Skoda Kodiaq showing a very unhistoric turn of speed (and economy!). Another excellent night by Neil brought them home with only 30 penalties, and valuable experience for the next outing.

Radin and Watson kept up their early momentum to run out overall Jacobite winners by the final Control, with the Christie/Forsyth team very close behind. Beefy and Ross took the Non-Expert, with Jesse and Emma taking the Novice win over Munro and Norrie. MacInnes and McGregor rounded off the results as top Historic. To round off a successful evening, Neil also produced the lowest tie-break time of only 20 seconds by deftly plot grid squares at opposite corners of the map!

The event saw a very supportive turnout of marshals and officials, warmly thanked by both the Clerk of Course and the winning navigator, and we now look forward to January’s Honkers Rally on the 17th, so make a date of it in your new year diary.

12/04/2025 - Brahan Navigational Rally

Nine crews took to the country lanes of the Black Isle & surroundings on Saturday night 12/4/25.

Navigating their way round the route on the Highland Car Club’s Brahan Navigational Rally.

Covering a total of 68 miles starting at Tore village Hall, passing through Munlochy village twice heading almost all the way to Cromarty via Culbokie village and finally finishing back at Tore Via Easter Kinkell & Millbuie.

Well done to all crews on completing the route with minimal penalties and thanks to committee member Stewart Hurst for organising the event.

All the crews seemed to enjoy it.

1/12/2024 - Jacobite Navigational Rally

Seven crews took part in Sunday’s Jacobite Navigation 12-car, departing from Balintore in Easter Ross on a mild but drizzly evening. Covering 51 miles over a compact route, cars passed though Nigg village before returning to Hill of Fearn, looping round Loch Eye, and on towards the more traditional roads of Delny and Scotsburn. The final two legs skirted around Fendom and Geanies, before finishing back at Hilton.

Outright winners were the Expert pairing of Andy Straube and Stewart Hurst in their VW Tiguan scoring an impressive zero penalties. The Novice class proved challenging for some and rewarding for others, with Tom Howie and Jorja Campbell on 7 penalties emerging as winners ahead of David Fraser and Susan MacRae on 14, with both crews working their BMWs hard.

Newly returned to rallying, Hugh Munro and Graham Norrie took their Range Rover Evoque to an impressive third in class on 18 penalties, whilst Graham MacDonald and Kimberley Waite lost some time mid-event in the Fiesta ST to finish fourth on 37 penalties. Rounding off the novice class were William and Ollie Smart, amassing 112 penalties in their Audi A3, with a simple Wrong Direction accounting for much of the damage.

As sole entrants in the Historic class Peter MacInnes and Neil MacGregor had an excellent night in their Targa-ready BMW 318, finishing with only 2 penalties. A great effort by Neil, thwarted only by slow driving, although Peter claims he was slowed by poor aerodynamics due to missing body panels. Andy Straube can explain.

Nav-Rally regulars Jesse Wigman and Emma Garden turned out to marshal on the event because their amazing Citroen Dyane is currently on axle stands in preparation for the Far North Winter Classic, the next event in the Highland Car Club calendar. Our first ever Targa, January 24th & 25th should already be in your diary!

Grateful thanks to competitors, marshals and organisers for making these events happen.
